Registering to Vote in Fair Harbor

Although for many people Fair Harbor is their second home, a property owner or renter can decide to register to vote in Fair Harbor.  This page explains the issues, and describes the process.

FAQs.

Do I have to be a homeowner to register to vote in FH?

No, NYS law allows people to register to vote wherever they have an economic or social relationship. That means renters can vote in Fair Harbor, too. It also means that all children over 18 can register to vote and participate in the referendum.

Does this affect my permanent address for tax purposes?

No. Voter registration is not a proxy for your residence for tax purposes.

Does this affect my right to my rent-regulated apartment?

No. More important is where you actually spend most nights each year, as well as the address on your tax return and where your children go to school.

How long do I have to remain a FH registered voter?

You can re-register back to your current address any time that you want. NYS has no rules about how often you may switch your voter registration, nor any rules about how long you must remain a voter in any location.

What happens to my voting rights if I remain registered in FH?

You can vote in all federal and NYS elections (governor, etc.) and all Town of Islip elections. In addition, you can vote for the member of Congress and for state legislators who represent Islip. You will not be able to vote for your current state senator or assembly member, your current member of Congress, or in your local elections (mayor, city council), unless you re-register elsewhere after voting in Fair Harbor.

Do I have to physically go to Islip to vote?

You can vote by absentee ballot in all regular elections. For fire department referendums you must go to Fair Harbor to vote.

Am I going to get into trouble if I register to vote in Fair Harbor?

The only way you could get into trouble is if you are registered in two places at the same time AND vote in two different places in the same election.
