FAIR HARBOR Fire Island Fair Harbor is a small community on Fire Island, which is located just a few miles south of Islip, NY across the Great South Bay. Its world famous beach and friendly people provide a welcome refuge from the cares of the work a day world. About Fair Harbor REAL ESTATE -- A few of Fair Harbor's 400 or so houses date to the 1940's, but most were built in the 1970's. POPULATION -- About 1,500 in summer.
SIZE -- Less than one square mile.
DISTANCE FROM NEW YORK CITY -- About 47 miles by car to the ferry dock in Bay Shore, N.Y., and six miles across the water by ferry to Fair Harbor.
GETTING THERE BY TRAIN
By Long Island Rail Road from Penn Station, about 80 minutes to Bay Shore. Trains leave Penn Station frequently for Bay Shore, with connections via either Babylon or Jamaica. Vans meet the trains for the $3.50, four-minute ride to the ferry docks, or a 12 minute walk thru Bayshore.
GETTING THERE BY VAN
David Brothers Car Service (631-665-1515) & Tommy's Taxi (631-665 4384) runs vans to and from Manhattan for $18 to $21 each way .
GETTING THERE BY CAR
About one hour and 20 minutes from Manhattan to the ferry dock. Take the Long Island Expressway to Exit 53, then the Sagtikos State Parkway south to the Southern State Parkway east. Turn off at Exit 42 South and follow signs through Bay Shore to the ferry. The ferry dock has overnight parking, but it's tight in high season.
